JONESBORO The Clayton County Board of Commissioners has moved up its deadline to renew County Manager Wade Starr’s employment, forcing incoming commissioners to make a quick decision on whether to keep the county’s top administrator.
Starr’s contract, which is not set to expire until Sept. 7, 2013, originally had a clause that said commissioners had to decide whether to extend the contract for another year no less than 90 days before its anniversary date. However, the commission voted unanimously Tuesday to change the deadline. Commissioners now have until 5 p.m., on Jan. 18, 2013, to decide whether to renew the county manager’s contract.
County Attorney Jack Hancock told commissioners it was Starr’s desire to see the change made.
The new date will be less than a month after commission Chairman-elect Jeff Turner and District 3 Commissioner-elect Shana Rooks take office. That means they will have little time to review Starr’s contract and evaluate his job performance before they have to make a decision on his future with the county government.
