Vendya Albertyne Lewis Little, 71, departed this life on Dec. 9, 2012 in Riverdale, She was born Aug. 3, 1941 to James Andrew Lewis (Chief) and Albertha Hunt Lewis in Newnan, Coweta County. The family later moved to Midway, Liberty County, Ga.
After graduating from Liberty County High School she attended Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, Ga. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. She moved to Milledgeville, and began her career as a High School Health and Physical Education Teacher. In 1971 she became the Recreation Director with the Georgia Department of Corrections at the Women’s State Prison. While working at the Prison, she became the first black female Deputy Warden in the Georgia Prison System statewide. She worked for the Department of Corrections for 31 years. She retired in 2002.
She was an active member of Flagg Chapel Baptist Church, in Milledgeville, Ga. She loved to sing and was a member of the choir. She sang in numerous weddings and her rendition of the “The Lord’s Prayer” would bring tears to your eyes.
She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Dominique Anthony Blasingame I (Charleen) and Quinton Alfred Lewis, (Monika), and one daughter, Yovancha Herukisan Lewis-Brown (Roy); a sister Beverly T. Gross, and a brother James Andrew Lewis, II (Dorothy). In addition, she leaves a loving Aunt, Esther Naomi Grayson; a Godsister, Loretta Baker; a special companion, Frederick Lockleer; and nine adoring grandchildren, Whitney, Dominique II, Victoria, Chelsey , Ashley, Courtney, Cierra, Dominique, and Quinton Jr. She also leaves a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family special friends.
The family held a wake on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midway, Ga. The funeral will be held today, on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Midway Congregational Church in Midway, Ga. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that a donation be made to Midway Congregational Church.
