Clayton reacts to school shooting

By Rachel Shirey

JONESBORO - Clayton County residents joined the nation in their shock over the mass school shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday.

Clayton County Schools spokesman David Waller said local schools are taking precautions following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left almost 30 people killed, including 20 children.

Waller said the Clayton County school system is on heightened alert, but school officials feel good about their safety.

“We have no reason to suspect that this will directly affect our school system,” Waller said.

However, Waller said they are prepared if a copy-cat does attempt to enter the school through their nationally recognized security system.

Only one door is left unlocked to the public and it is monitored by security cameras. Visitors must be buzzed in to be allowed entrance into the school office.

Likewise, Henry County Schools spokesman J.D. Hardin said the Henry school district stays on top of safety protocols and procedures.

"We work just as hard every day to ensure our student's safety as we do to educate them," he said.

According to Reuters, a heavily armed gunman opened fire on school children and staff Friday morning in the latest series of shooting rampages that have tormented the United States.

The suspected shooter was identified as Adam Lanza, 20, and was armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet-proof vest, according to reports.

Lanza was found dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, said Connecticut state police Lieutenant Paul Vance at a news conference.

If confirmed, it would be one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. History, Reuters reported.

Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots with some saying as many as 100 were fired.

“It was horrendous,” said parent Brenda Lebinski in a report to Reuters that detailed how she rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. “Everyone was in hysterics — parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don’t know if they were shot, but they were bloodied.”

Another person was being held in police custody after he was detained in the woods near the school wearing camouflage pants, according to reports.

Newton, with a population of 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City.

Reuters reported the United States has experienced a number of mass shooting rampages this year.

The deadliest came in July at a midnight screening of Batman film in Colorado that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

The worst high school shooting happened in 1999 when two students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, went on a rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., killing 12 students and a teacher before turning their guns on themselves.

In 2007, 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech university in the deadliest act of gun violence in U.S. history.

Henry Daily Herald reporter Johnny Jackson contributed to this report.

"The Luby's massacre was a mass murder that took place on October 16, 1991, in Killeen, Texas, United States when George Hennard (born October 15, 1956) drove his pickup truck into a Luby's cafeteria and shot 23 people to death while wounding another 20, subsequently committing suicide by shooting himself. It was the deadliest shooting rampage in American history until the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre."

....Before giving any thought to the Bus and Rail Transportation, in this county, We ought to be giving some thought to the safety of our children in this county.

Then why was I told by a SRO that she was not concern about the alarm not being turned on becasue of construction around the building...alarms and doors left open are almost the norm at the school I work at.

The world is much safer than it has ever been. The average person has a lot less chance of being a victim of violent crime now than years ago. Incidents like this are horrible but we should always be careful not to overreact. There is no reason to bunker down and make our schools inaccessible. If someone is willing to kill like this then they will always find a way. Also, we need to cool it on the gun rehetoric. We do not know what would have happened at Luby's or at any of the other killings if everyone had been carrying weapons.

0

OscarKnight 1 year, 7 months ago

...."gun rehetoric"........It's called Lawful Rights for Self Defense and Crime Prevention....and Being Prepared.

.....Show me where there have been mass shootings at Gun Shows. Most of these Mass Shootings are committed in "Gun Safe Zones", where firearms are not allowed.

......Now; Imagination, if you will, If your Lawful Rights, for Self Defense, were to be taken away. Don't be part of the problem, be part of the cure. .

"overreact" ?

.....These events has become part of our American History, during the last 25 years, and it's shouldn't be so, in a Nation that forms itself on a Peaceful existence and Freedoms to pursue happiness in our own time, and secure the freedoms for future generations. .

....."The world is much safer than it has ever been."

.......Tell this to the Families, of all of the Victims that has murdered by this cold blooded killer........Don't Be Part of The Problem, Be Part of The Cure. Don't Allow History Repeat Itself.

Victor Hill will protect you! Wait until he pulls all the Deputies out of the schools like he has said he will do! Great voting Clayton County moron voters! You do such great with those voting rights.

Getitstraight 1 year, 7 months ago

Wow MD, Victor Hill "said" he would do that? When did you talk to him? From what I've seen in the media, he's been out of the public eye since winning the election. I'm just saying. Either you've spoken to him personally or this is just another slanderish, uneducated remark about Victor Hill. Let's suppose what you stated is true,... did any of the previous Clayton County Sheriff's have deputies in the schools? If not, why is it any different or would be considered wrong if Victor Hill does the same?

......It saddens me to think that this horrible event is the wakeup call to move in the right direction, for securing the uncompromising safety of our children. .....Didn't anyone learn anything, from the past shootings on This Nation's School Campuses ?

OscarKnight your suggested link helped to solidify my previous point. Thank you. If any of the bloggers on this website didn't want Victor Hill for Sheriff, you should've voted for someone else and asked all of your friends and family who share your point of view & are resdients of Clayton County to do the same. If you did vote but you didn't vote for Victor Hill, and you're stiill upset ( judging from the various posts ),...simply move out of Clayton County! The bottom line here is that the people of Clayton County have spoken and it's done! Either accept it and move on or take your obvious bitterness and move out. Hey, here's a suggestion for you,....start a petition for Clayton County to be separated from the state of Georgia. Maybe, the courts have ordered Hill to stay in the County, so he won't be able to follow you! I'm sure the Sheriff's Association will support your idea. Governor Deal however, I'm not so sure about. By no means is Victor Hill without fault, but then again, neither are we.

.Getitstright; "simply move out of Clayton County!"

I came to Clayton County in 1960, and during this time, I have invested a lot of work, time, effort, and money into making my family home and my county a much better place to live.....I didn't vote for Victor Hill, and I think that you, your friend Victor, and these lopsided voters should be the ones moving out of our county; To make our county a much better place, for us to call our "Home" again.

Getitstraght; Most of these people in Clayton County, that you speak of, probably couldn't tell the difference between a worthy candidate from a bowling ball.

...How Many Defenseless Victims will be Murdered, before this Nation wakes up to the fact that We need people that respects our Gun Control Laws, before creating more Laws that The Bad Apples won't obey ?

My definition of Gun Control is when you use BOTH hands.

..Robert; Maybe you can teach Eldrin Bell how to control a gun. Bell make the News Headlines when he was shooting a revolver a few years back. He didn't know that by placing his hand in front of the cylinder, would cause injury. By the way; Bell was once the Chief Police of The City of Atlanta, when Maynard Jackson was the Mayor.

I heard rumor that he was going to move to Henry county and run for office.

....Self Protection should be more emphasized and encouraged by the leftist Democrats and by our Law Enforcement., in Clayton County. The lack of training for self defense, in no excuse; A claim that I have often heard echoed by our high ranking Law Enforcement Officials in our county.

....Clayton County has a Training Range, Paid for by The Tax Payers of Our County :

(("The Clayton County Police Department Firing Range was moved to southern Clayton County in the city of Lovejoy, Georgia in 1996 and is currently being used by the Clayton County Police Department, Clayton County Sheriff's Department, Clayton County Regional Law Enforcement Academy, Clayton County District Attorney's Office and the Clayton County Correctional Institute. The Firing Range is located adjacent to the Clayton County Police Department Emergency Vehicle Operation Course"))

The Leftist, from The Democrat Party, would rather have us to believe that this is about "Guns", but in reality, it's about the Laws that prevents us to from Defending Ourselves.
