Lovejoy dominates region postseason awards

Much like it dominated Region 2-AAAAAA during the season, Lovejoy swept the superlative awards for the postseason from the region.

The second-ranked Wildcats eight players to make the first team offense and seven named to the first defense of the all-region team.

Coach Al Hughes was named the region’s top coach with running back Travis Custis named the top offensive player and Nathaniel Norwood receiving the top defensive honor. Brandon Davis was named the top special teams player by the league coaches.

Lovejoy became the first Clayton County school to reach its classification’s championship game two straight seasons. The Wildcats lost 21-14 to Norcross in last Saturday’s Class AAAAAA title game at the Georgia Dome.

Luella had one player to make the offensive and defensive team. Morrow had one player to make the offensive first team.

Lovejoy senior quarterback Alejandro Bennifield was named the region’s top quarterback. During his two-year career at the school, who never lost a region game and compiled a 27-3 record as a starter.

Four of the Wildcats offensive lineman were named to the first team and wide receivers JuMichael Ramos and Arshad Jackson made first team in addition to kicker Jamie Nunez, who was perfect on all his extra-point attempts.

Making the offense for Morrow was wide receiver Sterling Taylor, a senior. For Luella, running back Trae Bonner was named to the first team.

On the defensive side of the ball, DeMarquis Gates, who missed several games with an injury, was impressive enough to be named to the first team from Lovejoy.
