COLUMBUS - For the first time in three seasons, Clayton State women’s basketball team captured the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship to remain undefeated on the season.
The Lakers, who improved to 29-0, got 18 points from senior Drameka Griggs to clinch the tournament championship with an 81-54 win over North Georgia on Sunday at the Lumpkin Center in Columbus. It was the fourth tournament title in the program's history, and first sicne the 2009-10 season.
“It has been a while since we have won a Peach Belt Conference tournament title,” Clayton State coach Dennis Cox said. “The last couple of years we were not able to accomplish that goal. I’m real pleased at the way our player were able to commit themselves and stayed focused.”
Griggs was named tournament MVP helped lead five players into double figures. Also scoring in double figures for the Lakers were Shannon Smith and Bena Hanyard each had 13 points while Kayla Mobley had 12 points and Keona Dixon finished with 11.
The Lakers forced 33 turnovers against North Georgia.
“They are an amazing team, and they make you play ugly,” North Georgia coach Buffie Burson said. “They took us out of some stuff we wanted to do.”
The Lakers are expected to host the NCAA Div. II tournament Southeast Regional next weekend when the field is announced later today.
