Convicted killer indicted in attack on jailer

A convicted felon sentenced two weeks ago to life in prison for the shooting death of a Riverdale father of five, has been indicted for attacking a prison guard.

Nahshon Minor was indicted in Clayton County Superior Court for the Aug. 11 attack on a corrections officer. The indictment alleges that he hit the guard in the face with a hard, plastic serving tray and with his fist. He has been charged with aggravated assault on an officer, obstruction of an officer, and battery.

Minor pleaded guilty in January to shooting to death Anthony Wroten. Minor and several other men broke into Wroten's house in 2008 to rob him. When Wroten returned home unexpectedly, Minor fired 17 rounds, hitting Wroten all over his body.

In other cases:

Driver Sambou Nyassi, 30, of Forest Park, was indicted for first degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving without insurance or driver's license, driving too fast for conditions, seat belt violations and running a red light.

Forest Park police said Nyassi was driving a 2000 Dodge Caravan along Old Dixie Road at about 10:16 p.m., on Oct. 11. He drove through a steady red signal at the intersection with I-75 without stopping as instructed, said police. The Caravan hit a vehicle, fishtailed, then hit a second, and third vehicle, according to warrants.

Sallimatou Hydara, 8, was a passenger in the Caravan, but was not restrained, said police. She was ejected and suffered extensive injuries, including severe head trauma. Police said she died about six hours later at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Shanora Lafran Driscoll was indicted for aggravated assault in an alleged Aug. 5 incident involving the stabbing of Ryan Horton. Driscoll was also indicted for two counts of cruelty in the third degree, and battery.

Edward Sutton, IV, was indicted in the July 8 alleged aggravated assault on Michelle Nicastro, with a bottle. Sutton also faces charges of cruelty to children, and battery. Police said Sutton hit Nicastro with an open hand, causing her to become unconscious.

Stadon Devon Cooper and Courtney Cherye Benjamin were indicted in a Sept. 3 armed robbery of James Hill. Indictments allege that the two stole money, an iPhone and Air Jordan shoes from Hill at gunpoint. They are also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, because they allegedly aided a minor to commit the aggravated assault. Benjamin was indicted for prostitution with Hill. Cooper was indicted for possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by receiving stolen property.

Ifiok James Usanga was indicted for theft by taking. Police allege that he stole money from Charley's Steakery, from June, to September of 2009. He was also indicted for identity fraud for using the American Express card of two other people.

Helena Michelle Ferrell was indicted in a Nov. 5 incident, on four charges of cruelty to children in the third degree, cruelty to children in the first degree, aggravated assault, battery under the Family Violence Act and disorderly conduct. Police allege that she beat Akayla Ferrell with her fist, bit her arm and threatened her with a butcher knife.

When officers responded to the scene, Helena Ferrell allegedly cursed them and spit in their faces.

Derrick Lamont Woods, was indicted for cruelty to children in the second degree and battery under the Family Violence Act. Police said he slammed his wife into a window in front of a juvenile witness.

Ballard Simmons, Jr., has been indicted for enticing a child for indecent purposes, child molestation and sexual battery against a person under 16. Police allege that Simmons encouraged a child to walk with him, on Oct. 26, to Charles Drew High School for the purpose of molesting her. Police said he grabbed the child's buttock and pressed his nose to it.

Jarvis Quincy Reid and Tommy Lee Hendrix, Jr., were indicted for rape, child molestation, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, false imprisonment and aggravated assault with intent to rape. Police said the two gave alcohol to an underage girl on Sept. 30, 2010, pinned her to the bed and pulled down her pants against her will.
