North Clayton’s Marcus Hunt and Brianna McQueen of Mundy’s Mill were named the top players in Region 4-AAAA by the league’s coaches.
Hunt, a Georgia Tech signee, was named the Region 4-AAAA Boys Player of the Year, while McQueen, an East Tennessee State signee, is the region’s girls’ top player.
“Marcus has had a great season for us,” North Clayton coach Martisse Troup said. “He has been real consistent.”
Jonesboro girls coach Michael House was named the region’s top coach while Dan Maehlman of Jonesboro and Forest Park’s Antonio Wade shared the boys coaching honors.
Heading into the region tournament next week, the 6-foot-6 Hunt is 26 points shy of the 2,000-point mark. Last week, the school retired Hunt’s No. 24 jersey during Senior Night festivities.
McQueen is Mundy’s Mill’s all-time leading scorer with 1,309 points. She is averaging 26.2 points per game this season while leading the Lady Tigers to the No. 3 seed for the region tournament.
“She is very competitive,” Mundy’s Mill coach Tu Willingham said. “She is also very unselfish as she makes sure that all her teammates get involved.”
Rounding out the boys first team are Lovejoy teammates Justin Tuoyo and Jermaine Hough, Patrick Petty of Jonesboro, Nick Crawford of Forest Park, J.R. Holder of Mount Zion and Justin Bridges of Riverdale.
Lovejoy is the top seed heading into the region tournament, which starts today at Tri-Cities High in East Point. The Wildcats have already secured a state playoff berth since they were the regular season region champion.
This is the second athletic honor that Hough, a Jacksonville State football signee, has won this season. He was named the Clayton News Daily/Henry Daily Herald Clayton County football player of the year. He was also named the Class AAAA defensive player of the year by the Georgia Sportswriters Association.
On the girls’ side, Christal Williams of North Clayton, Navilla Paul of Lovejoy and Forest Park’s Ashlee Cole were named to the first team in addition to Jonesboro teammates Kim Dawkins and Briana Benson.
