North Clayton gets another shot at Jonesboro. And this time, the stakes are much higher.
Marcus Hunt, a Georgia Tech signee, scored 29 points as the Eagles upset No. 9 Lovejoy on Thursday in the semifinals of the Region 4-AAAA Tournament at Tri-Cities High. It was the second time this season that North Clayton has beaten Lovejoy, which was playing its first game in nine days.
Lovejoy (21-5) received a bye into the semifinal round because it was the top seed. The Wildcats will take on Forest Park this evening at 5:30 p.m. in the region tournament consolation game.
Both teams will still advance to next week’s state playoffs, but must play their first round game on the road.
Jonesboro, a 47-45 winner over Forest Park on Thursday, will take on North Clayton for the region champioinship at 8:30 p.m. The third-ranked Cardinals won both regular-season games this season.
Jonesboro is the defending region champion and state semifinalist from last season. North Clayton will be playing for its first region title since 1993, the same season the school won its only state title.
In addition to Hunt, Dionte Agard finished with 17 points for the Eagles (16-10).
