Jessica Ofor, 18, volunteers her time in the mother/baby unit at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale on weekends.
She said she assists with feeding the babies, preparing bottles and changing the infants’ diapers. One of her goals, she said, is to become a pediatrician, so volunteering at the unit fits like a glove.
Ofor is the STAR student at Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro and has a 4.07 grade-point average.
“It feels good,” she said. “I never thought I’d be a STAR student, but I always kept a good [grade-point average].”
She said she has been accepted at the University of Georgia, where she will study biology, which is a requirement for the career she wants.
She said her STAR teacher, Terry Garner, has a passion for his craft. “The way that he teaches, it really sticks in your mind.”
