Southern Crescent’s Nine Players to Watch

The Southern Crescent has produced several top baseball players throughout the seasons. This group of seniors appears to be another talented crop. The Clayton News-Daily/Henry Daily Herald takes a look at some of the top seniors entering the 2012 season.

Here are a group of players to keep an eye on this season:

Travis Berger, Union Grove: Was a co-MVP of the team last season. In 38 innings pitched, he held opponents to a .180 batting average. He had 60 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA.

Rashad Crawford, Mundy’s Mill: The Savannah State signee hit .425 last season with a pair of homers. The speedy third baseman had 32 stolen bases.

Vince Jackson, Luella: A 6-foot-4 lefty, the Tennessee signee compiled a 6-4 record with 83 strikeouts last season. At the plate, he hit .424 with three homers and 25 RBIs.

Vance Johnson, Lovejoy: Was a standout in the field and on mound last season. Hit .450 with 24 RBIs. Was 3-2 with a save as a middle relief pitcher.

Kevin Martin, ELCA: The Tennessee Tech signee had a 3-2 record with a save last season. In 34 innings, he had 62 strikeouts.

Michael McClellan, Union Grove: A Georgia Southern signee, the catcher hit .389 last season in 22 games. He also had 14 RBIs and eight doubles.

Grant Perkins, Ola: One of two returning starters for the Mustangs, the second baseman had 105 at-bats in 2011. He hit .381 with a homer and 11 RBIs.

Chase Scott, Luella: One of the top hitters in school history with 22 career home runs. Last season, the third baseman hit .385 with eight homers and 26 RBIs.

Jerek Wright, Mundy’s Mill: In helping the Tigers to the 2011 Region 4-AAAA championship, he compiled a 5-1 record with 58 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched.
