Clayton County police are still investigating two late Thursday night shootings, but have learned the facts are not exactly as they were first reported.
Two teenagers were wounded in the separate shootings, said a police department spokesman, Officer Phong Nguyen. No one has been charged as investigators continue to sort through details and information from witnesses, he said.
A shooting at 735 Caribbean Drive, near Forest Park, was reported as a random incident. A 17-year-old was wounded and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. However, Nguyen said a subsequent investigation has revealed that the shooting was drug-related.
"This was not a random act of violence," he said Friday afternoon. "It was the result of drug-related activities. The victim and shooter knew each other."
Nguyen did not release the name of the alleged victim, nor of the shooter. No information was available on the teenager's condition.
The second shooting was reported at 6418 Monica Drive, on the other side of Morrow, about 5 miles from the first shooting. Nguyen said that shooting was first reported as a drive-by. A 16-year-old boy was standing on the porch of the home when someone drove by, firing shots, witnesses first told police.
However, Nguyen said the shooting was accidental.
"It turns out some kids were playing with guns, and one shot the other one," he said. "They lied to us. But it looks like an accidental shooting."
Nguyen said the investigation is continuing into that shooting, too, and no one has been charged.
The 16-year-old was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Both victims are expected to survive their injuries.
