Senior guard Brianna McQueen turned in her usual standout performance, scoring a game-high 22 points, as the Mundy’s Mill Tigers used a strong second half to dispose of host North Clayton 52-39 in a Region 4-AAAA contest on Tuesday.

North Clayton played the Lady Tigers close in the first half, matching them almost bucket for bucket and going into the halftime locker room trailing only 23-19.

The Eagles applied full court pressure at the onset of the third quarter, and it helped force Mundy’s Mill into two turnovers on its first two possessions. This looked to be an omen that these two teams would keep trading blows well into the fourth quarter. But McQueen helped shift momentum when she drove the baseline and finished with an acrobatic layup that sparked a 10-2 run.

Mundy’s Mill junior Alana Fraley scored eight of her 10 points on three straight possessions of that spurt to put the Lady Tigers up 33-23. But it was a stretch of contrasting second-chance scoring opportunities that helped Mundy’s Mill separate from the pesky North Clayton bunch.

Six of the 10 Mundy’s Mill points in that run came on second- and third-chance shots. Meanwhile, North Clayton misfired on five shots on one possession.

The Eagles’ scoring drought continued in the fourth quarter until Mundy’s Mill rested its starters late in the period with the game all but decided.

With its fifth straight win, Mundy’s Mill raised its record to 14-4 (10-2 in the region) and hasn’t lost since a 51-46 defeat at region-leading Forest Park on Jan. 6. North Clayton, which has lost six of its last eight, drops to 8-7 and 7-5 on the season. Moneisha Dyer also chipped in 12 for the second-place Lady Tigers. Freshman Christal Williams led North Clayton with nine points.
