Clayton County Public School’s District Spelling Bee will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, from 8 a.m., to noon, at the Recreation Outreach Center of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, located at 148 Church St., in Jonesboro.

Saturday Jan. 28

Clayton County Public Schools will host the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Saturday, Jan. 28, from 8 a.m., to noon, at Smith Street Elementary School, located at 6340 Hwy. 42 South, Rex. For more information, call (770) 960-5750

Riverdale High School’s Sunceray Johnson, special interrelated teacher, will host the third annual Miss Elite of Clayton Scholarship Pageant at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Faith Walk Ministries. The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its work session Monday, Jan. 30, at 5:30 p.m., at the Clayton County Public Schools Administrative Complex, 1058 Fifth Ave., in Jonesboro.

Wednesday Feb. 1

Clayton County Public School’s “Hear Our Voices Speech Contest” will be held Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 8 a.m., to noon, at the Recreation Outreach Center of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, located at 148 Church St., Jonesboro.

The Clayton State University Enrollment Management Division will host a “Care & Majors” Fair on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 10:30 a.m., to 1:30 p.m., and from 4:30 p.m., to 6 p.m., on the second floor of the James M. Baker University Center. The purpose of the fair is for students to “rediscover campus programs and services that support their success.”

Forest Park High School’s Fine Arts Department was recently awarded the “prestigious” Mr. Holland Opus Grant for the 2011-2012 school year. Sean Terrell, orchestra director, said the department will use the funds to purchase new instruments, and repair broken instruments.

Kimberly J. Casimier, KaJe’da Y. Sheats, Rebecca Tercy, and Joecita M. Williams, of Jonesboro, made the Dean’s List at Darton College for the Fall 2011 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must be full-time and have earned a 3.4, or higher, grade point average. Shree L. Allison and Melodee Ford, of Jonesboro made the Merit List at Darton College in Albany for the Fall 2011 semester. To qualify for the Merit List, a student must be part-time and have earned a 3.4, or higher, grade point average.

Clayton State University Health Services (UHS) is offering flu shots for the Clayton State, and surrounding, communities. No appointment is necessary for the shots, which can be administered to individuals, age 3 years old, and older. Costs are: Clayton State students, faculty, staff, and family members –– $15. For the general public –– $20. The Vaccine Information Sheet and the 2011 Flu Shot Consent form are available on the UHS web site: http://nursing.clayton.edu/uhs/.

The Clayton County Public Library System offers many services to students, including online practice tests and tutorials in math, reading and writing, as well as test-preparation materials for the SAT, ASVAB, GED, TOEFFL, and Occupational Aptitude Tests.
