Drew began its five-game homestand on a high note with a 74-58 win over visiting Henry County on Friday to avenge an earlier loss to its Region 4-AAA rival.

The Titans, ranked No. 7 in the latest coaches’ poll, were led by senior forward Derrick Frye with 13 points, while junior guard Barry Mayes added 12. The Titans next face Langston Hughes on Saturday, while Henry County goes up against second-ranked Eagle’s Landing.

Drew and Eagle’s Landing meet Tuesday in a key region matchup.

With Friday’s win, Drew won for the seventh straight time.

Technical difficulties with the gym’s lighting system delayed the start of the second half, but did not stop the Henry County offense from scoring the half’s first eight points. Shelton Williams was the main culprit, hitting three of his first four second-half shots.

The momentum quickly changed hands following consecutive Warhawk technical fouls, one on Coach Vincent Rosser after arguing an out of bounds call, and the other after a taunting call.

The fouls resulted in a six-point swing for Drew to end the quarter. A rejuvenated Titan offense continued its patient play resulting in two Rufus Brown dunks.

Warhawk guard Zavier Rosser, the coach’s son, connected on consecutive 3s to cut the lead late in the fourth, but Drew’s guards made their free throws to put the game away for good.

Shelton Williams led the Warhawks in scoring with 14 points, Zavier Rosser collected 11 points in the losing effort.

“We still need to do a better job rebounding and blocking out,” said Drew coach Jarrod Davis, whose team improved to 18-3 overall and 11-2 in the region.
