Frank Campbell Pierce
Frank Campbell Pierce, 83, of Riverdale, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012. The family received visitors on Sunday, from 4 p.m., to 6 p.m., at Mowell’s Funeral Home, in Fayetteville. The funeral was held on Monday at 10 a.m., at Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Jonesboro, followed by interment at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Forest Park.
The son of James L. and Mary C. Pierce, Mr. Pierce was born on Feb. 11, 1928, in Atlanta. He graduated from Campbell High School in Smyrna. Mr. Pierce served as a Radio Operator in the U.S. Army 57th Signal SV Company, from 1946 to 1948 in post-war Germany, where he participated in the Berlin Airlift and received the WWII Victory and Army of Occupation Medals.
Following his military service, Mr. Pierce joined the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Trappist Monks), at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, where he lived and served for eleven years. He later received a release from his monastic vows and married the late Sara Kate Pruitt on Dec 22, 1962. They were married for 40 years and resided in Riverdale, where they raised three sons.
Mr. Pierce was a founding member of Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Church, and a Knight of the 4th degree in the Fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus, Father Bleimel Council.
Survivors include his three sons, Frank Michael Pierce, James Timothy Pierce, and Joseph Elias Pierce; one brother, John “Jack” Campbell Pierce; and one grandson, Dustin Elias Pierce.
