Clayton students lag in math, science, social studies

JONESBORO — Ask Clayton County elementary and middle school students about literature and they might be able to answer your questions.

Ask them about geometry or geography, however, and they might struggle to come up with a response.

Recently released school system-level data from Georgia’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs) shows Clayton County students are struggling to meet or exceed state standards in math, science and social studies. The tests are administered each year to students in the third-grade through the eighth-grade.

No more than 70 percent of students in any grade met or exceeded standards in social studies. Eighth-graders had the highest passing mark with 69.6 percent. Third-graders had the next highest passing mark (68.2 percent). Sixth-graders had the lowest passing mark with only 55.4 percent of students in that grade level meeting or exceeding standards.

The students did a little better in science, with half of the grade levels tested getting past the 70 percent passing mark. Seventh-graders, by far, had the highest passing rate with 79.4 percent of students meeting or exceeding the state’s standards for their grade level. They were followed by fourth-graders (71.4 percent) and fifth-graders (70.6 percent).

Sixth-graders again had the lowest passing rate with 58.3 percent of students meeting or surpassing the science standards for their grade level.

Only two grade levels got past a 70 percent passing rate in math. Seventh-graders had an 87.1 percent passing rate while fifth-graders had a 74.3 percent passing rate. Three other grade levels hovered between a 68 and 69.5 percent passing rate, but only 65 percent of eighth-graders met or exceeded the state’s math standards for their grade level.

This doesn't surprise me at all. But our educators are wanting more pay and we as taxpayers are getting less for our money.

It's time that we start paying our teachers based on their results, instead of their time on the job or the amount of education they have.
