Child rapist gets 125 years

Alejo Vazquez Gomez was sentenced to 125 years in prison followed by life on probation after being convicted on 11 counts of child rape.

Alejo Vazquez Gomez was sentenced to 125 years in prison followed by life on probation after being convicted on 11 counts of child rape.

JONESBORO — A Clayton County Superior Court judge sentenced a child rapist to 125 years in prison Thursday after a trial jury convicted him on 11 counts involving a victim who was just 8 years old when the abuse started.

Because of the violent nature of the crimes, Alejo Vazquez Gomez, 50, will have to serve every day of those 125 years, said Clayton County Executive Assistant District Attorney Lalaine Briones.

"He was sentenced to 125 years in prison followed by life on probation," said Briones. "That's how bad it was. He is a very sick guy."

The jury took about 30 minutes to find Vazquez Gomez guilty on all counts.

He is being held in the Clayton County Jail pending transfer to a state prison. Vazquez Gomez did not testify in his own defense, which is his right under the law.

Briones said the child was the daughter of a former girlfriend. The abuse started when the girl was 8, she said.

"It continued until June 12, 2010, when she went to Mexico to visit her aunt," said Briones. "She was supposed to return in August 2010 to begin school but refused to return. She told her aunt he'd been sexually abusing her, raping her. Awful, awful, awful things."

Briones said the child was 13 when she reported the abuse to authorities in Mexico. She said the child gave the same account to local officials.

"Her account was consistent two years later when she took the stand to testify against him Wednesday," she said. "She had no motive to lie and had an easy out. She didn't have to return from Mexico to testify and we could not have made her return. She came back on her own."

Briones said the girl, now 16, cried during her testimony. Jurors obviously believed her, she said.

"She was incredibly credible," said Briones.

The girl testified that Vazquez Gomez put a hand over her mouth and threatened to kill her and her mother if she told on him.

Vazquez Gomez made a partial confession to police when he was arrested but never admitted to the complete story, she said. However, Superior Court Judge Geronda Carter ruled the statement was not made voluntarily and could not be used against him.

Briones said the girl is "very happy" about the verdict and sentence.
