Reporter cited for coverage of slain deputy’s funeral

DESTIN, Fla. — Clayton News Daily crime and courts reporter Kathy Jefcoats placed among the state’s top journalists in the Georgia Press Association’s 2012 Better Newspaper Contest.

Jefcoats won second place in the Hard News Reporting, Class D category, for her coverage of slain Clayton County sheriff’s Deputy Richard Daly’s funeral. The awards were announced July 7 during an awards banquet the association held as part of a multi-state journalism conference in Destin.

The St. Louis native has been with the Clayton News Daily since April 2011. She previously worked at the News Daily’s sister paper, Henry Daily Herald, as well as newspapers in Gray, Carrollton, Atlanta and Aiken, S.C. She earned her AA degree in journalism from Macon State College and her BA degree in mass communications with a minor in criminology from the University of West Georgia.

She previously won numerous other Georgia Press Association awards for her work at other newspapers. Past honors have also been bestowed on Jefcoats by the Georgia School Boards Association, Georgia School Food Service Association, Georgia College Press Association and the Southern Regional Press Institute.

Jefcoats lives in Henry County with her husband.
