Grady drops bid for Southern Regional October 6, 2015

Groups to be gifted with grants Thursday

Eleven local charitable organizations will get a cash boost Thursday through an award by the sheriff’s foundation, the Clayton News Daily has learned.

Clayton County Sheriff Kem Kimbrough started his foundation in 2010 to ease the financial burden of non-profit organizations. The foundation takes in donations and proceeds from fundraisers throughout the year and divides the money among deserving agencies.

This year’s recipients are Oak Forest Neighborhood Watch, Cory’s Foundation Inc., Stockbridge/Jonesboro Alumni Chapter of Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Sisters Empowerment Network Inc., Good Shepard Clinic Inc., We Can Do All Things Inc., Reaching for HEAVIN and LIFE.

Prevention Plus Inc., Hearts to Nourish Hope Inc. and Ladies of Favor Inc. are second-year recipients.

Ladies of Favor representative Gabrielle Starr said last year’s $1,000 was used to create an after-school program for young girls.

Starr said last year that the agency’s goal is to “let teen girls know that it’s OK to just be a child and not to be in a rush to be an adult.” The group promotes abstinence, offers spiritual guidance and teaches them leadership and self-esteem, said Starr.

Marybeth Leavell accepted last year’s grant on behalf of Prevention Plus.

Leavell said at the time that the grant would be used to help students apply for college because some can’t even afford the application fee. She said the agency targets young people 14-24 who have not graduated from high school or gotten a GED.

The Kem Kimbrough Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose goal it is to alleviate the financial stress many residents are facing because of the economy, said Kimbrough.

The awards will be distributed at Arts Clayton in Jonesboro Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

....What about the back logs of unserved warrants ?

....Has things changed in Our Jail since Victor Hill lost and Kem Kimbrough became The Sheriff ?

....In my opinion : Another smoke screen by Kem Kimbrough.
