Man busted for taking pics of woman undressing

FAYETTEVILLE — A Jonesboro man was holding his 1-month-old baby girl as he used his cellphone to snap photos of a woman undressing inside a Goodwill store, said Fayetteville police.

Maurice Smith, 32, is being held in the Fayette County Jail on charges of being a peeping tom and unlawful surveillance, said police Detective Mike Whitlow. Whitlow said Smith may have photographed other women without their knowledge.

"We checked his phone and there are other photos on it but we can't identify the victims because he didn't take pictures of their faces," said Whitlow.

Whitlow said Smith was walking around the Fayetteville Goodwill Store Wednesday, holding his baby daughter while taking photos of female shoppers. Two were of a woman bending over so her face is obscured, he said.

"He'd taken eight photos of a woman undressing in one of the dressing rooms," said Whitlow. "She looked and saw the cellphone between the curtains. She followed him in the store and called 911."

Police responded and Smith was arrested in the parking lot, he said.

During his post-arrest interview, Smith reportedly told police about a website, upskirt.com, where users post candid photos of women taken without their knowledge.

"This site apparently caters to this type of fetish," said Whitlow. "We can't prove that he uploaded any photos to that site."

However, police are warning female shoppers of voyeurs taking photographs of women in dressing rooms using cellular telephones. The case is still under investigation and police are trying to determine if any of the other photographs were taken in the Fayetteville store.

Anyone who was in the store on Wednesday, June 27, and who may have seen Smith is encouraged to contact the Fayetteville police. Whitlow said women should be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior immediately.

....It's my opinion, that if it wasn't for our residents of Clayton County, Fayette County wouldn't have any News to report.
