Morrow Police dance off with ‘special’ payday

MORROW — Never underestimate a dancing policeman’s ability to get people to wave their dollar bills — especially when he is wearing a wig.

Morrow Police Chief Chris Leighty announced this week that his department’s officers and community volunteers solicited $3,339.13 in donations for the Special Olympics by dancing in wigs and serving customers June 21 at the town’s Joe’s Crab Shack location. The effort was part of the restaurant chain’s “Tip-A-Cop” fundraising initiative.

“We’re very proud since this was our first year participating in this program,” Leighty said. “You can’t go wrong with Special Olympics. The community really turned out and did a great job.”

The size of the financial haul was larger than the police chief was expecting. “I had thought, quite honestly, that with it being our first year that we would raise about $1,500,” he said. He then said the department is looking to build on this year’s collections and raise $4,000 next year.
