Voter registration deadline looms for primary

JONESBORO — The clock is ticking on would-be voters hoping to cast a ballot in next month’s primary election.

Monday is the state-mandated voter registration deadline for the July 31 primary, where voters will get to have their first say in who fills elected offices that directly impact their community.

Those not registered to vote can do so at the Elections and Registration office at 121 South McDonough St., Jonesboro.

Registration forms can be picked up at any county library branch, city hall, Department of Drivers Services office or on the Georgia Secretary of State’s web site, www.sos.ga.gov/. Registration forms that are sent to election officials by mail must be postmarked by midnight Monday.

Potential voters must list their Georgia driver’s license number on the registration application and sign an oath declaring they meet the qualifications to vote in Georgia. Anyone who lives on a street with no name, or who does not have a street number, must provide a diagram showing where they live.

People wanting to register to vote must be legal U.S. citizens, residents of the county they want to register in and at least 17-and-a-half years old, although they must 18 to vote, according to the Secretary of State’s web site. They also cannot have been previously declared mentally incompetent by a judge or have been convicted for a felony involving moral turpitude. More info at: (770) 477-3372.
