A man suspected of robbing a Jamaican restaurant has died following a stand-off with Clayton County police, said a police spokesman Thursday.
Freddie Burton, Jr., 24, barricaded himself inside his sister’s home on Fairway Court, in unincorporated Clayton County near Riverdale, on Wednesday, after –– police said –– he robbed Divine Flavor Jamaican Restaurant, about three miles away.
Police said Burton refused to come out, and fired on officers. Officers returned the gunfire and killed Burton, said Officer Phong Nguyen.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. GBI Spokesman John Bankhead confirmed the investigation.
“The GBI is investigating at the request of the Clayton County Police Department,” said Bankhead. “Also, the autopsy on the man shot was conducted today at the GBI Crime Lab.”
Nguyen said he could not provide additional details, including how many officers are under investigation.
“We aren’t releasing any other information beyond the press release because this is an ongoing investigation,” he said.
Warrants issued through Clayton County Magistrate Court allege that Burton entered the restaurant on Flint River Road just before 4 p.m., and stole $200 from the cash register.
Store employees told police Burton forced them to the rear of the business, where the office is, and stole their cell phones and keys. Both workers identified Burton from a six-person lineup, according to the warrants.
Police said Burton ran across Flint River Road and into an apartment complex. When he spotted Clayton County police officers, officers said, Burton fired shots at them while running away. During his escape, police said, Burton carjacked a woman and her 2-year-old daughter, forcing them out and fleeing the scene, according to police.
Police said they caught up to Burton on Fairway Court, which is where he lived with his sister. With the police in close pursuit, Burton jumped out of the moving car, causing it to hit a house. He ran to his sister’s house and barricaded himself inside.
