Riverdale Mayor Evelyn Wynn-Dixon will be speaking to fourth- and fifth-grade students at Brown Elementary School at 9 a.m., about Women in History. The school is located at 9771 Poston Road, in Jonesboro.


Kemp Primary School will host a “Career Day” from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., The school is located at 1090 McDonough Road, in Hampton.

Morrow High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Chapter is selling tickets for the Atlanta Hawks-New Jersey Nets game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Phillips Arena. Tickets are $23 each. A portion from each ticket sold will be donated to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Contact Matt Smith, the DECA advisor at Morrow High, at (404) 362-3872. 


Jonesboro Middle School will host a Saturday Parent Academy from 9 a.m. to noon, on March 24 and again on April 14 in the sixth-grade wing of the school. Refreshments and child care service will be provided. The school is located at 1380 Arnold Street, in Jonesboro.

Clayton State University’s accounting students from the College of Business will offer free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the College of Business Building. The final two VITA dates for 2012 will be Saturdays, March 24 and 31. Taxpayers will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis. If taxpayers have further questions, they should contact the VITA hotline at (678) 466-4527. Spanish translators are available, but must be scheduled in advance.


The Lovejoy High School Marching Band will present a play titled, "Why You Playin'?" on Saturday, March 25, at 6 p.m. at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center. Band students will take center stage beside seasoned actors as they emphasize social issues, such as the need for organ donors, the importance of early detection of prostate and colon cancer, building strong family relationships, and the benefits of arts in education. The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its monthly work session meeting Monday, March. 26 at 5:30 p.m., at the Clayton County Public Schools Administrative Complex, 1058 Fifth Avenue, in Jonesboro.


The Clayton County Library System’s Lovejoy Branch will host a “Spring Yard Sale” on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Featured items may include gently used clothes, books, food and much more. Clayton County Public Schools will hold its third annual Promoting Student Achievement (PSA) Golf Tournament, on Friday, April 20, at Lake Spivey Golf Club, located at 8255 Clubhouse Way. The 18-hole contest will benefit the school system’s student scholarship fund and promotes college enrollment. The cost to participate in this year’s tournament is $125 per individual or $500 per four-member team. Payment must be received by Wednesday, April 18. The fee includes tournament play, a box lunch that is placed on golf carts, an awards dinner, and tournament gifts and prizes. Several levels of sponsorships are available that range from a low of $1,500 to a high of $5,000. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and is limited to the first 36 four-person teams. A shotgun start at noon will mark the beginning of the tournament, and a dinner and awards program will be held at 5 p.m. or at the completion of the contest. Individuals and teams wishing to play in the tournament, become a sponsor, or need additional information can contact Teri Rodgers, PSA Committee member, at (770) 473-2700.

Brewton-Parker College, in Mount Vernon, will be offering the Baron Ace Scholarship to academically qualified freshmen and transfer students enrolling in Fall Semester 2012. The scholarship provides students with the opportunity to earn $30,000 in scholarship money over a four-year period. Scholarship selection is competitive based on community and church involvement. For freshmen, the minimum criteria for consideration are scores of 450 for both the math and verbal portions of the SAT and a 3.25 high school GPA at the time of application. Minimum scores of 20 for both the English and Math portions of the ACT are acceptable. For transfers, the minimum criteria for consideration are a 3.5 transfer GPA or Phi Theta Kappa membership. Both freshmen and transfers are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and to participate in one of the following Baron Choice clubs: Baron Student Ambassadors, Baron Choir, Glimpses of Truth, Baron Spirit Squad, Baron Hot Peppers, or Baron Tutors. The Clayton County Public Library System offers many services to students, including online practice tests and tutorials in math, reading and writing, as well as test-preparation materials for the SAT, ASVAB, GED, TOEFFL, and Occupational Aptitude Tests.
