Clayton County grand jury returns indictments

A Clayton County Superior Court grand jury indicted a man for bringing in a handgun to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in January, according to documents.

Brook Edgar Smith was indicted on two counts of security avoidance. Prosecutors allege Smith carried a .22-caliber handgun into the airport Jan. 29 without a permit. He was released on $5,000 bond.

In other indictments:

Derrick Jermaine Duncan was indicted for battery, cruelty to children and simple battery in an Aug. 18 alleged incident. Police said Duncan hit one of his children and allowed two others to witness the beating. He has a prior conviction of a similar act, alleges the indictment.

Kendrick LaShawn High, 35, is being held on $300,000 bond in the Clayton County Jail on incest, aggravated child molestation, child molestation, rape, statutory rape, cruelty to children in the first degree, false imprisonment and sexual battery. He was indicted on the Oct. 23, 2009, charges Wednesday.

Jamal James Phillips was indicted for enticing a child for indecent purposes and interference with custody. Police said Phillips took the alleged victim from the custody of his mother without permission in the Feb. 18, 2011, incident.

Sharon Denise Earley was indicted for beating her grandson in the face with a leather belt Sept. 10. Prosecutors charged her with cruelty to children in the second degree and battery.

Markuis Devante Henry was indicted for cruelty to children in a May 21 incident. Prosecutors allege Henry used a BB gun to shoot out Edquavious Hines' eye. Hines lost the sight in his eye, according to the indictment. Henry has also been charged with aggravated battery and reckless conduct.

Rickey Dwayne Clark was indicted for cruelty to children in the first degree, battery under the Family Violence Act, cruelty to children in the third degree and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Police allege Clark hit his son on the face with his hand and forced the child to disrobe in front of his siblings.

David Bailey, 52, of Decatur is being held on $45,000 bond in the Clayton County Jail on charges he used burglary tools to steal an air conditioning unit Feb. 9. He was indicted on charges of theft by taking, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and criminal damage to property in the second degree.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
