The Clayton County Senior Services Department will host its annual Mayfest celebration, in recognition of Older Americans Month.
A festivities are scheduled for Friday, May 11, from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., at the Clayton County International Park, located at 2300 Highway 138 E., in Jonesboro.
Marquita Bundrage, event and marketing coordinator for Clayton Senior Services, said the event is also a free health-and-wellness gathering for senior adults, 55 and older.
“The day of fun begins with a competitive fitness walk, followed by musical entertainment throughout the day, by 104.1F.M. Saturday morning radio host, Youngblood,” said Bundrage.
“A variety of events helping to promote senior health and wellness, such as stretching exercises, and Zumba fitness dance demonstrations, are just a few of the activities planned to keep everyone up and moving, throughout the day.”
In addition, she said, seniors can spend time connecting with local health-care vendors, who will be offering services. During the event, she said, each senior will also receive a nutritious, free lunch to enjoy.
“Mayfest has continued to grow over the years,” said Bundrage. “Last year’s celebration was the largest one ever, with over 650 seniors in attendance.”
This year, the department is expecting at least 1,000 seniors and other residents to attend, she said, and the department will selling Mayfest, souvenir T-shirts for $5, for those who want to wear them on the day of the event. The shirts are on sale at the following locations: the Frank Bailey Senior Center, located at 6213 Riverdale Road, in Riverdale; and the J. Charley Griswell Center, located at 2300 Highway 138 E., in Jonesboro.
