With only a week and a half to go before the City of Jonesboro hosts an installment of the Atlanta Jazz Festival’s 31 Days of Jazz, details are emerging about scheduled performers and food vendors.

The free concert, titled “Jazz Under the Stars in Jonesboro,” marks the first time that the city has been chosen to host an Atlanta Jazz Festival concert, and the city got a late start on planning the event only a little over one month ago. City Council member Pat Sebo said she is confident that plans have come together, though, for a nice event in the city.

At least two local individual performers and a jazz combo are scheduled to play in the concert, she said, while at least two local restaurants are slated to provide food.

“Getting the Atlanta Jazz Festival to come to Jonesboro is a really big deal,” Sebo said. “It’s a great feather in the cap for Clayton County, to be able to bring that kind of culture and entertainment to the county.”

Jazz Under the Stars in Jonesboro is set to take place May 12, from 6 p.m., to 10 p.m., at Lee Street Park, located at 140 Smith St, in Jonesboro. Attendees are being encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and blankets to sit on, at the courthouse lawn.

Sebo said she has so far lined up Jonesboro jazz musician Jason Bitten, Atlanta musician Baatin Muhammad, and a newly formed Clayton State University Community Jazz Combo band to be on the concert’s schedule. She added a Clayton County Library System youth services librarian has also expressed interest in having his band perform at the concert, and may be added to the lineup as well.

A jazz group slated to perform later in the evening at the Clarion Hotel, at the intersection of Tara Boulevard and Old Dixie Highway, at the may also be added to the schedule, according to Sebo.

“The lineup is coming together really nicely,” she said. “It’s going to a great evening of jazz under the stars.

Forest Park-based Anne and Bill’s Restaurant and the new Crave restaurant located at the Clarion Hotel are signed up to sell pre-ordered dinners, although they are still finalizing their menus, Sebo said. She added that attendees are also encouraged to bring their own coolers full of drinks, including alcohol, if they wish to do so.

Sebo said one of the key things still needed for the concert is sponsors. She said she has so far gotten Paragon Securities, the Clarion Hotel, and one individual — whose identity is being kept secret — signed up to be concert sponsors.
