An Atlanta man accused of raping a woman two months ago, while offering her assistance with car issues she was experiencing, was taken into custody by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office this week, according to officials from the office.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office’s Fugitive Unit arrested Sonny Joe Brown, 39, on Murphy Avenue, in Atlanta, across the street from the Lakewood MARTA Station, around 11 p.m., on Thursday.
He has been charged with two counts of rape, and one count each of false imprisonment, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, and aggravated sodomy, in connection with an incident that took place on March 4, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
“Brown attempted to run but investigators quickly caught up with him, placing him in handcuffs,” the new release states.
The sheriff’s office alleges that Brown had stopped to give two women assistance after their car ran out of gas on Interstate 285, in Riverdale, on March 4. He reportedly took them to a nearby gas station three times to get enough gas for their car, to get it to start.
After the third trip, he allegedly suggested one of the women should stay with the car, to prevent it from being stolen, while he took the other woman to get more gas. He is accused of pointing a gun at the head of the woman who stayed in his car, and then raping her, during that fourth trip to the gas station, according to the sheriff’s office’s statement.
“He let her go only after he was finished, and kept some of the victim’s personal items,” according to the news release.
He was still listed as being in the Clayton County Jail as of 7:30 p.m., and no bond amount had been set, according to online jail inmate records.
