A Riverdale family came back from spending Memorial Day in Orlando to find the top of their house gutted by fire.
The fire on Sugarcreek Drive, reported late Sunday night, didn’t “appear to be intentional,” according to Capt. Walter Barber of the Clayton County Fire Department.
Beulah Scott, who lives across the street and who called 911, said she first “smelled it because the windows were up,” but didn’t know what to make of the smell and went to bed.
“Then I heard some little boys beating on the door, ‘It’s a fire, it’s a fire!’ ” Scott said. “So I jumped up and looked out the window.”
What she saw was a glow and flames leaping into the sky.
In addition to destroying the top level of the two-story house, the fire damaged the siding on the houses next door.
Scott said the family, which prefers not to be identified, is staying safely elsewhere and that insurance will help cover the damage.
No injuries were reported.
