Free blood tests to highlight diabetes day

— Clayton County residents will be able to observe World Diabetes Day by getting their blood sugar levels checked for free by Clayton County Board of Health officials next week, the agency announced.

The health board will highlight World Diabetes Day with free blood sugar testing Nov. 14 at its office located at 1117 Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

“In Clayton County, 12.4 percent of residents have a diagnosed form of diabetes, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower-limb amputations,” according to a Board of Health statement.

The free tests are just one of many diabetes-related activities the health department will offer that day.

The agency will also offer several U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-prepared “Road to Health” classes at the Jonesboro office at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The classes covers diabetes and diabetes risk factors.

The board will also partner with the University of Georgia’s Clayton County Cooperative Extension Office at noon to offer a “healthy cooking demonstration.” The demonstration will teach people how to prepare healthy meals.
