Rotary sponsors Riverdale spelling bee

RIVERDALE — The Clayton County Rotary Club sponsored the Riverdale Preparatory Spelling Bee Saturday by donating dictionaries to contestants in the fourth through eighth grades.

Rotary member Lata Chinan also donated the grand prize of a Kindle Fire tablet, which was awarded to the winners of the upper two age categories.

Club President D.J. Fulton said Rotary places a strong emphasis on literacy and education. He hopes that, by providing students with dictionaries, they will be providing students with the fundamental tools they need to enjoy reading.

“We think anytime you read a novel or a book you need to have the resource to find out quickly what any unfamiliar word means. That’s why the dictionaries,” Fulton said.

Over the course of four years, the Rotary Club has donated 14,000 dictionaries to public school students.

The spelling bee competition was hosted at the Riverdale Town Centre and included students from kindergarden through eighth grade. The purpose of the bee was to prepare students for local, regional, and national spelling bee competitions.
