MORROW — A Morrow man was indicted by a Clayton County grand jury on several charges, including involuntary manslaughter.

Joseph Jarvis Fluellen is accused of killing Mario Laurent as the two men struggled over a .38-caliber handgun.

Fluellen was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, tampering with evidence, theft by receiving stolen property, false imprisonment, burglary, eight counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery, eight counts of false imprisonment and possession of a weapon during a commission of a crime.

The incident occurred at 6418 Monica Drive in Morrow on Jan. 5.

Fluellen initially told police his friend had been the victim of a drive-by shooting. Later, police said, Fluellen confessed to accidentally shooting him in the chest while they played around in his bedroom with a .38-caliber handgun.

Fluellen also told police he put the handgun in the backyard before officers arrived.

When police arrested Fluellen, they said he was identified as one of the suspects in a December home invasion.

Clayton County Police Detective Thomas B. Martin said Fluellen caused the death of Laurent “without any intention to do so,” according to the arrest warrant.

Police said Fluellen admitted he pointed the handgun at Laurent. Laurent grabbed the gun and the gun discharged, striking Laurent in the chest. The bullet struck vital organs, according to the detective.
