Road race for children hits Lake Spivey

Registration already under way

That’s what Clayton County Parks and Recreation officials want people to do next month in the streets of the county’s Lake Spivey region. The county’s recreation department is partnering with Lake Spivey Community and First Christian Church of Jonesboro will host the 5th Annual Lake Spivey Road Race on Nov. 3. It will begin at 8 a.m., at the church, located at 2272 Walt Stephens Road, in Jonesboro.

The annual 15K race and 5K fun walk and run is held every year to support the Jonesboro-based Kids Outdoor Initiative, which takes small groups of Clayton County children to the Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island every summer. Proceeds from the race and an associated barbecue contest go towards paying for scholarships to send children on the trip.

People interested in participating in the race should let their fingers run — not walk — to sign up for the event online at lakespiveyroadrace.org/.

Potential runners can sign up all the way until the day of the race, but Oct. 19 is the early registration deadline, according to a promotional E-mail flyer. The entry fee for the 15K race is $30 until Oct. 19, and $35 after that date. The fee to register for the 5K fun walk and run is $35 until Oct. 19, and $30 after that date.

On-site registration will end at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the race.

The 15K race course will make a loop around Lakes Spivey and Jodeco before returning to First Christian Church, according to the race website. The 5K fun walk and run will cut through the Lake Spivey Country Club and Foxfire subdivision.

There will be nine age group categories, including 15-21, 22-27, 28-35, 36-40, 41-46, 47-52, 53-59, 60-65 and 66 and over. Awards will be awarded to the overall first-place male and female runners.
