JONESBORO — Briana Benson had 13 kills to lead No. 10 Jonesboro to a 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 victory at home Wednesday against Fayette County in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
The Lady Cardinals (29-6) advance to second round. They will play at No. 2-ranked Southeast Whitfield on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Ashley Hand added nine kills, Michaelle Smith had six kills, while Kimberly Dawkins had five kills and Kendall Thomas added three.
Woodland 3, Shaw 0
The Lady Wolfpack survived a tough first-round opponent in No. 9-ranked Shaw for a 25-12, 19-25, 27-25, 25-23 victory at home.
Woodland (38-3) advances to play Dalton, a 25-13, 25-19, 25-13 winner over Chestatee.
Wright lauded the play of Nicole Findura in the middle and the team’s serves.
“It was a tough night, but they hung in there and played really good together,” Woodland coach Gerri Wright said. “I was very proud of them.”
Columbus 3, Locust Grove 0
The Lady Wildcats couldn’t overcome No. 4-ranked Columbus in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
Locust Grove lost 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 to a Lady Blue Devils team that featured formidable hitters in Chandler Barre and 6-foot-2 Brianna Gogins.
The Lady Wildcats end the season 20-17.
“We’re not a big team, but we played with a lot of heart,” Locust Grove coach Tom Murray said. “They battled in every match. The success that we had this year was a testament to that.”
Sandy Creek 3, Dutchtown 0
The Lady Bulldogs lost to top-ranked Sandy Creek, 25-11, 25-14, 25-8 in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
Dutchtown ends its season 12-15.
Union Grove 2-8, Houston County 3-0
The Lady Wolverines split their doubleheader Wednesday in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs.
Top-ranked Union Grove (26-6-2) lost the opener 3-2 in 11 innings before the shutout in Game 2. Senior pitcher Megan Betsa pitched all 18 innings of the doubleheader.
Game 3 will be played today at 5 p.m.
South Effingham 4-9, Woodland 0-5
The Lady Wolfpack lost in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs at home.
Woodland ends its season at 19-13.
Wayne County 10-12, Locust Grove 2-3
The Lady Wildcats season came to an end on the road in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
It was the third straight season Locust Grove reached at least the second round. The Lady Wildcats end their season 23-10-1.
“Give a lot of credit to Wayne County,” Locust Grove coach Chris Davis said. “You hope your girls look and say we’ve got a long ways to go. ... At the same time I’m very proud of them to make it to this point again.”
