FOREST PARK — Clayton County police officers said they were forced to shoot a man threatening them and another person with a knife, Monday afternoon.
The unidentified man was taken to a hospital for treatment and was still alive about 4:30 p.m., said Lt. Christopher Windley. The officer has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by Georgia Bureau of Investigation, he said.
Windley said officers got a call about 2 p.m. about a “demented person with a knife” in the area of Sylvia Drive and a shopping center at 5863 Old Dixie Road in Forest Park.
"He had a large knife toward his neck and confronted a citizen," said Windley. "The officers tried to talk to him but became agitated and threatened the officer and the citizen."
Windley said the officer was forced to shoot the man. No one else was injured.
The shopping center was blocked off during the confrontation.
"The situation escalated fast," he said.
Because of the ongoing investigation and privacy laws, Windley was unable to provide any specific details about the man.
The GBI and investigators from the Clayton County District Attorney's Office were called to the scene, he said.
