PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH

1T. Travis Custis, Lovejoy: The ninth-ranked Wildcats blowout region wins have limited the standout running back’s playing time. He is learning to make the most of his time on the field this season. In a 60-0 win over Luella last week, the Georgia Tech commitment rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns.

1T. Cameron Sutton, Jonesboro: During the Cardinals’ region win over Spalding, the Tennessee commitment averaged 26 yards each time he touched the ball. The senior has been a standout on both offense and defense. He accounted for three touchdowns in the win and had 157 yards of total offense on six touches.

  1. Alejandro Bennifield, Lovejoy: The senior quarterback has passed for 1,420 on 81 of 140 passing for a 57 percent completion rate. As a starting quarterback for the ninth-ranked Wildcats, he has a 21-2 record. This past week in a 60-0 win over Luella, he threw for 206 yards.

  2. Mario Atkinson, Jonesboro: Just last season, the junior was competing on the junior-varsity level. As the starting quarterback on the varsity, the seventh-ranked Cardinals are 6-1 heading into a showdown with Riverdale. He has passed for 1,378 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

  3. Rodney Smith, Mundy’s Mill: Until this season, Smith was more known for his standout play as a second baseman on the school’s baseball team. All that has changed this season as he has developed into one of the top rushers in the Southern Crescent. The junior has rushed for 1,256 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Tigers, who are tied for first in their subregion. He is averaging 179 yards per game.

Out: Troy Wyche (Riverdale).
