MORROW — People can recycle a lot of things.
They can recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, clear glass products and even newspapers.
But, athletic shoes?
Strange as it may seem, people can indeed turn in their old, worn out tennis shoes before the end of the month to be resurrected in a new form.
Clayton State University is holding a Recycled Athletic Shoe Drive until Oct. 31 to benefit Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program.
Shoes that are dropped off at a collection bin outside the LakerCard Center in the school’s James M. Baker University Center will be sent to a Nike facility in Memphis and sliced into different components and then ground up, according to the Reuse-A-Shoe website, nikereuseashoe.com/.
What’s left of the shoes after grinding process will be used to create track and playground surfaces, as well as cushioning for outdoor basketball and tennis courts, indoor synthetic courts and wood courts, according to the website.
Only athletic shoes, regardless of the shoe brand, will be accepted, according to university officials. Shoes with any metal parts, sandals, flip flops, cleats and dress shoes are a strict no-no.
