Bridging the gap

Morrow to officially open new Lee Street Bridge

— The Lee Street Bridge which crosses Interstate 75 in Morrow has been open for several months, but city officials will make it official next week.

The city and the Georgia Department of Transportation will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the bridge Wednesday, at 10 a.m. on the bridge which is right next to the Ga. 54 bridge over the interstate. A reception will take place afterwards at Drury Inn & Suites, at 6520 South Lee Street, in Morrow.

The Lee Street Bridge has altered traffic at the Ga. 54 exit on I-75. Before it was built, people leaving the Southlake Festival Shopping Center had to get on Ga. 54 to cross the interstate, and then turn on to Adamson Parkway to get to Lee Street, where several residential neighborhoods and the entrance to Clayton State University are located.

The street’s name changes to North Parkway north of the university and continues on to Forest Parkway.

The bridge now connects the street to the shopping center’s parking lot, which provides people living along the street with access to Mt. Zion Road and Southlake Parkway without having to drive on Ga. 54. At peak traffic times, traffic along Ga. 54 can stretch a mile northward from the interstate.

People can also now get to Southlake Mall while only having to cross the busy highway at one intersection which connects the mall with the Southlake Festival Shopping Center as a result of the bridge’s opening.

People interested in learning more about the ribbon cutting ceremony should call the Morrow Business and Tourism Center at 770-968-1623.
