County, cities will mediate service delivery issue

— Officials from Clayton County and its seven cities have confirmed they will meet behind close doors Monday to mediate their differences in an ongoing service delivery battle.

The mediation will take place at 6 p.m., at the Clayton County Board of Commissioners office, which is located at 112 Smith St., in Jonesboro. Jonesboro has announced a quorum of its city council members will likely attend the meeting, so they will have to vote in public to go into executive session before it begins. The council members will participate in the mediation during the executive session.

County officials said the public will not be able to watch the mediation proceedings.

The service delivery issue is tied to negotiations between the county and the cities on the local option sales tax, otherwise known as LOST. The cities have agreed to tie to the issues together and will not sign one without settling differences on the other.

Several mayors said the county walked out of efforts to mediate the LOST issue this week, and it will likely have to be settled in Clayton County Superior Court.
