Jonesboro moves up. Riverdale is out. And Eagle’s Landing Christian remained the same while Lovejoy did not move back into the weekly Associated Press poll, which was released on Tuesday.
Jonesboro is now at No. 7 in the Class AAAA polls, a spot up from No. 8 last week. This is the highest the Cardinals have been ranked since occupying the No. 7 spot for three weeks in 1978.
Last week, Riverdale entered the polls at No. 8, tied with Jonesboro, but last week’s 38-0 loss at unranked Dutchtown dropped the Raiders from the poll. Riverdale did not receive any votes from the 12 pollsters in this week’s poll.
Eagle’s Landing Christian, which was idle last week, is still ranked No. 1 in the Class A polls. The Chargers received eight of the 12 first place votes. Calvary Day in Savannah received the other four first place votes.
ELCA is 3-1 heading into Saturday’s matchup against Holy Innocents’ in the first Region 5-A contest for the schools. The game will be played at Riverwood High in north Atlanta.
In Class AAAA, Jonesboro is tied with traditional power Carrollton in the No. 7 spot. Carrollton is 1-2 this season with its only win coming against Chapel Hill. Carrollton has losses to Oxford of Alabama and was defeated by defending Class AA champion Calhoun last week.
Lovejoy, which was ranked earlier this season, compiled 14 points for this week’s poll. Parkview, which had a stunning win over then-No. 1 Grayson, entered the ranking to bump out Lovejoy, which was coming off a win over Alpharetta.
The Wildcats open their Region 2-AAAAAA schedule Friday against Druid Hills at North DeKalb Stadium. Lovejoy coach Al Hughes will be going for his 100th coaching victory in the 7:30 p.m. game.
