Sponsors of the 2012 Wheels for Diamonds Poker Run are working to build a Miracle League Baseball Field in Lovejoy.
LOVEJOY — The 2012 Wheels for Diamonds Poker Run Saturday is a motorcycle ride to help people with special needs acquire a baseball field equipped to handle their disabilities.
“We need to invest in our community, to give everybody a place to go and have fun, to learn, to fellowship,” said Dawn Davis, Southern Crescent Sports Foundation Executive Director. “The benefits of having this type of park is endless.”
The Miracle League allows people of all ages with disabilities to play baseball, Davis added.
The Southern Crescent Sports Foundation, along with the City of Lovejoy, Harley Davidson of Clayton County, Old Courthouse Tavern, Buffalo Cafe in Griffin and Hooters in McDonough are sponsoring the ride.
Registration for the ride will begin at 10:30 a.m. The cost to register for the poker run is $40 for bikers/riders with a poker hand. The cost for a rider only, without a poker hand is $30.
“Riders will go to five stops to collect a poker card,” Davis said. “The poker run is a five-card draw.”
Davis said the first stop for the poker run is at Harley Davidson of Clayton County located at 1384 South Lake Parkway in Morrow.
“Then they will proceed to Old Courthouse Tavern in Fayetteville to collect the second poker card and have lunch,” Davis said.
The tavern is located at 105 Glynn Street South in Fayetteville. The riders’ route includes the third stop at the Buffalo Cafe in Griffin, which is located at 1421 Georgia Highway 16 in Griffin. The fourth stop is Hooters in McDonough, which is located at 1858 Jonesboro Road in McDonough. The fifth and final stop of the poker ride will be at Mayor’s Park in Lovejoy.
Following the ride is an afterparty at 5 p.m., at Mayor’s Park in Lovejoy. The cost to attend is $25 for people not participating in the motorcycle ride. Mayor’s Park is located at 11620 Hastings Bridge Road.
The Miracle League field will cost approximately $370,000, according to Davis. It will be located in Lovejoy inside H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Excel) park.
