FOREST PARK — Some residents of the Ashton Walk senior community have recently organized a new group to encourage other Forest Park elderly citizens to stay active.
One of the members of Guys & Dolls of Ashton Walk, Barbara Finley, said the group is preparing to help with the third annual Family Friends Day for Ashton Walk.
“The purpose of the group is to help get the seniors in the community become more active,” Finley said. “We plan to do volunteer work with the local cancer society, we are trying to be active in our neighborhood. We started in June and we have already had one activity, which was a trip Bay Breeze Restaurant in Jonesboro for lunch.”
Ashton Walk is a senior community in Forest Park, located at 4950 Governors Drive.
Ashton Walk’s “Family Friends Day” is scheduled to be held at the facility, Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.,
Some of the activities to be held during the event include a scooter and wheelchair race, chair messages, blood pressure screenings, auto repair and make-up tips.
“Forest Park Fire and Police Departments are coming to give safety tips for the elderly,” Finley said. “We have arranged for a person from Life Wireless to come and sign up seniors to receive a free cell phones.”
Finley said there will be several activities for the children who are visiting on “Family Friends Day” such as a watermelon seed-spitting contest.
Guys & Dolls of Ashton Walk will be selling fish dinners for $5, fish sandwiches for $2.50 and other refreshments, during the event.
“We will have a raffle for a $50 and a $25 Visa Card,” she added.
The group is planning a trip to the Apple Festival in Ellijay, on Oct. 20, and they are organizing a catered Christmas Dinner for the upcoming holiday season.
