FOREST PARK — Forest Park unanimously agreed Friday to give the federal government notice that the city is now ready and able to purchase Fort Gillem. And the city is ready to put its money where its mouth is.
The city is prepared to make a down payment on the $15 million required to move forward with the $30 million project.
Forest Park City Manager John Parker said the measure was done by the city to show “good faith” to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment, and other federal, local agencies along with governmental jurisdictions.
Parker said nearly $15 million will be paid by the city over a seven-year period to purchase Fort Gillem, as a down payment. He added that the city does not have a final closing date for the army base, but expects they will close between January and February in 2013.
“We are assuring the army that the city of Forest Park is supporting the purchase of the Fort Gillem property with good faith and credit of the city,” said Parker. “All that says is that the city guarantees the payment to the U.S. Army.”
