With Lovejoy’s 58-3 win over Druid Hills on Friday, Wildcats coach Al Hughes got his 100th victory in the Region 2-AAAAAA opener for both teams.
Wildcats tight end Arshad Jackson had three receiving touchdowns and running back Travis Custis scored two touchdowns in the win at North DeKalb Stadium in Chamblee.
JuMichael Ramos also had a receiving touchdown while El Malik Roberson returned a blocked punt for a score. Randy Anyanwu returned an interception for a touchdown for the Wildcats (4-1).
Hughes, the winningest coach in Clayton County history, also became the first coach in the county to get 100 wins while coaching a county school.
Drew 14, Starr’s Mill 6
Lester Knauls scored on a 1-yard run on a fourth down play at the goal line to help the Titans spoil Starr’s Mill homecoming.
The eventual game-winning score came with 1:58 remaining. During the drive, Drew converted on three fourth-down plays.
Drew’s defense held on the Panthers ensuing drive to seal the win.
“My defense stood so tall tonight,” Drew coach Jarrett Laws said. “The defense was strong. This is the best our defense has played in the four years that we have been around.”
The Titans’ first score came in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by Marquis Terry.
Drew opens its Region 4A-AAAAA schedule on Thursday against Forest Park at Southern Crescent Stadium.
Union Grove 23, Northgate 0
The Wolverines bounced back from their first loss of the season with an impressive win on the road in a Region 4-AAAAA cross-over game.
Austin Brown scored twice for Union Grove, which improved to 3-1. Miles Vaughn added another touchdown. Shawn Davis made a field goal.
McIntosh 23, Mundy’s Mill 18
Mundy’s Mill junior running back Rodney Smith scored two touchdowns in the loss. He had scoring runs of 67 and 10 yards for the Tigers, who dropped to 0-4 under first-year coach Greg Manior.
On Thursday, Mundy’s Mill open its Region 4A-AAAAA schedule against winless Mount Zion at Tara Stadium.
