Jonesboro delays council meeting for celebrations

Body will assemble during Georgia Cities Week

— Don’t bother going to the Jonesboro police headquarters for a City Council meeting Monday because you’ll be the only person who shows up.

The council postponed this month’s business meeting until April 22 so it can be held as part of Georgia Cities Week. The gathering will begin at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of the police headquarters, 170 South Main St. A city equipment displays and a reception to honor all residents of Jonesboro will be held immediately after the meeting.

The one-time meeting change is among a handful of activities Jonesboro will do during the week of April 21.

Jonesboro Neighborhood Watch will hold a picnic April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Battle Ground Park on Lake Jodeco Road.

The city will also host a community screening of “Smokey and the Bandit” — which was shot in and around Jonesboro — April 26 at 8 p.m. in Lee Street Park, 140 Smith St. Residents are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and coolers full of snacks and refreshments to the screening.

Downtown Jonesboro was used as Texarkana in the movie, with the building now known as the Arts Clayton Gallery serving as the Coors Beer warehouse that Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed break into early in the film.
