Thieves enter unlocked park bathroom, take toilet

— If you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be neat — but don’t swipe the seat.

Thieves literally went into Jonesboro City Hall’s backyard earlier this week and stole a $700 toilet from Massengale Park.

Police Chief Franklin Allen said the porcelain throne was taken sometime between late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning from the park behind city hall on North Avenue. He said the bathroom was not locked even though the park was not in use.

It’s a case that has city officials scratching their heads. Do the thieves plan to sell the potty for spare parts, or did they take it in case they really need to use the bathroom later?

“It’s not a typical crime,” Allen said. “We’re in the process of reviewing our procedures at the park and finding a way to lock the bathrooms at night.”

Police believe the thieves brought tools with them to turn off the water flow and then dismantled it before removing it from the bathroom.

Police have no leads in the case because there was no video surveillance equipment at the park and the thieves left no evidence that can be used to identify them.

The county is infested with criminals. They would steal from their own families.

Here is a perfect case where our city and county officers need to be patrolling our neighborhoods, parks and businesses instead of trying to make a quick buck on traffic violators. Don't get me wrong traffic safety is very important in any community. However, it appears that this county goes to the extreme when it comes to traffic enforcement in certain areas, where their manpower and enforcement skills are actually needed in the neighborhoods they are supposed to be protecting.

On a second note, if the City of Jonesboro paid $700.00 for a toilet, they should be investigated for their lack of good judgement and spending of the taxpayers money. Anybody can go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a great toilet for under $200.00!!
