MORROW — The Center for Academic Success at Clayton State University is gearing up for its spring Tutoring Blitz.

CAS Tutor Coordinator Maurica John said the blitz is designed to help students prepare for finals. It is set for April 24-25, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the Commons area of the James M. Baker University Center.

More than 40 tutors — Clayton State faculty, staff and students — will be available to students. Writing Specialist Barbara Gover will also be available to assist students. Light refreshments will be provided.

‘You’re Hired’ at North Clayton

North Clayton High School hosted its “You’re Hired!” event, an interview and potential employment opportunity for students March 22.

Tachina Mack, human resources director at McDonald’s, the world’s largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, and her teammate interviewed 40 students who registered.

Parent liaison Tiffany Adams met with students to share interviewing tips such as wardrobe choices, interview etiquette, resume information and details about the event.

Morrow Middle plants urban community garden

Morrow Middle School’s Urban Roots Community Garden is back up and ready for spring planting, said garden director Veleria O’Kelley. The school’s eighth-grade science club began turning over soil and weeding the garden March 14.

Garden coordinator Samuel Bryant said the club will plant a variety of vegetables and herbs this season to share with the school community.

Military notes

Army National Guard Pfc. Marshall Porter Jr. has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus. Porter is the son of Tammy Barefield, and nephew of Anita Irving, both of Newnan. He is also the grandson of Movale Hagler of Riverdale.

Army Pvts. Shantescia Jones, Breanna Walker, Garrett Cloud, Wesley Dixon and Rahsaan Deloney have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Jones, the sister of Javonte Lee of Jonesboro, is a 2012 graduate of Mundys Mill High School. Walker, the daughter of Jacquelyn Wortherly of Forest Park, is a 2012 graduate of Forest Park High School.

Cloud is the son of Alicia Babb of Conley and a 2012 graduate of Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood. Dixon is a 2012 graduate of Morrow High School. And Deloney is the son of Alesha McKinney and Travas Maitland, both of Jonesboro; he is a 2012 graduate of Mundy’s Mill High School.
