JONESBORO - As owner of The Country Store in Jonesboro, Debbie Wade knows a thing or two about fresh fruits and vegetables.

She’s been visiting the store since childhood and has owned it for 21 years.

“There aren’t many places like this anymore,” she said.

Food is picked in the morning and is for sale in the afternoon. Wade works with several Georgia farmers to bring in food as fresh as possible — everything is farm fresh and seasonal.

“We’re known for vine-ripe tomatoes and our hot boiled peanuts,” she said.

But her big seller is watermelons. Wade said she sells about 10,000 a season.

“We have the farmer back the truck right up under the tent,” she said.

Wade also offers more than just locally grown food; she has cultivated a sense of community in her store. She said her customers are like family and coming to the store is like coming to see a friend.

“We keep up wth people. We always know when there’s a birth or a death and we watch their children grow up,” she said.

Wade’s two children also grew up in the store. Her youngest son, Michael Wade, started making change and bagging items when he was 5 years old.

Gwen Grayson said she’s been coming to the store as long as she can remember. Grayson has lived in Clayton County her whole life and moved to Jonesboro 28 years ago.

“I tell everyone about this place and I’m always bringing family with me to shop,” she said. “I love the vegetables — they’re so fresh and the prices are great.”

In addition to summer fruits and vegetables, the store sells locally made jams and jellies and an array of flowers.

In the next week, The Country Store is expecting fresh butter beans and peas to come in while fresh collard greens and turnip greens are available every weekend. Georgia peaches will come in at the end of April.

The store is located at 10291 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro next to the CVS. They accept credit cards and local checks. They’re open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily. To contact them, call (770) 477-6733.
