LOVEJOY — Skateboarders only have the concrete sidewalks and asphalt parking lots to show off their skills and test new tricks. And anxiety-ridden business owners must encounter it on an increasingly regular basis.

However, both skateboarders and business owners could find relief sooner than later, if the city’s plans to create a skatepark come to fruition.

Mayor Bobby Cartwright said he is planning to construct a five-station skatepark downtown, behind the Lovejoy Community Center at 11622 Hastings Bridge Road, moving the existing playground to Mayor’s Park next door.

He said the jungle gym and playground at the site would be relocated into Mayor’s Park next door to make room for the skatepark, which would also be adjacent to the existing basketball court.

Cartwright said the park would cost about $90,000. He plans to fund its construction through sponsorships, donations and grants.

He said he hopes to procure funding and have construction completed this year.
