Deal to speak at Clayton State’s spring commencement

Cooper is the son of Richard Cooper Jr. of Forest Park and Debbie Cooper of Fayetteville. He is a 2012 graduate of Forest Park High School.

MORROW — Gov. Nathan Deal will be guest speaker at Clayton State University’s spring commencement exercises.

Clayton State will hold two ceremonies May 4 for more than 500 graduates. Deal will speak to the roughly 240 grads from the colleges of business, health and information and mathematical sciences at the 9 a.m. ceremony.

Atlanta District 2 City Councilman Kwanza Hall will speak at the noon ceremony to some 275 grads from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Parent University workshop Saturday

Clayton County Public Schools will host a Parent University workshop for parents of students with disabilities Saturday from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

The workshop will be at the Perry Center for Learning Cafeteria in Building 100 at 137 Spring St. in Jonesboro. Parking is available on Spring Street across from Building 200.

It will include information and discussions on the impact of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards curriculum on students with disabilities. Organizers will speak about the EXCEL Program, the transition to work experience and how to prepare for the post-secondary experience.

Officials with the Clayton Center Service for Developmental Disabilities will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on available summer resources.

Military notes

Army Pvt. Mara Thomas recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Thomas, the daughter of Benjamin Thomas in Jonesboro, is a 2010 graduate of Mount Zion High School.
